A Happy Hondón New Year
Posted by admin in Hondon Tourism on 03/01/2010
We wish you all a happy and properous new year for 2010… let it be peaceful !
Here’s a bit about the Spanish New Year…. (ref: WikiPedia)
Spanish New Year’s Eve (Nochevieja or Fin de Año in Spanish) celebrations usually begin with a family dinner, traditionally including shrimp and lamb or capon.
Spanish tradition says that wearing new, red underwear on New Year’s Eve brings good luck. The actual countdown is primarily followed from the clock on top of the Casa de Correos building in Puerta del Sol square in Madrid.
It is traditional to eat twelve grapes, one on each chime of the clock. This tradition has its origins in 1909, when grape growers in Alicante thought of it as a way to cut down on the large production surplus they had had that year. Nowadays, the tradition is followed by almost every Spaniard, and the twelve grapes have become synonymous with the New Year. After the clock has finished striking twelve, people greet each other and toast with sparkling wine such as cava or champagne, or alternatively with cider.
After the family dinner and the grapes, many young people attend New Year parties at pubs, discothèques and similar places (these parties are called cotillones de nochevieja, after the Spanish word cotillón, which refers to party supplies like confetti, party blowers, party hats, etc.).
Parties usually last until the next morning and range from small, personal celebrations at local bars to huge parties with guests numbering the thousands at hotel convention rooms. Early next morning, party attendees usually gather to have the traditional winter breakfast of chocolate con churros (hot chocolate and fried pastry).
Oops! Could have been worse in Frailes !

Hondon de los Frailes is the neighbouring village to Nieves… about 5 minutes drive, was the scene of an unusual accident recently involving a fuel tanker collapsing THROUGH a road / buried sceptic tank.
Thankfully no-one was hurt and a lot of people were scratching their heads !!!
As seen on “La Verdad TV”:
“Propane gas leak from a truck in Hondon de los Frailes. The tanker discharging the fluid in the area of a restaurant. The propane leak has been declared of type 3, (quite serious) under the Special Dangerous Goods of the Generalitat Act.”
Grapes and more Grapes !!
Posted by admin in Hondon News, Hondon Tourism on 31/10/2009
The Hondón Valley is to have a bumper grape harvest in 2009 despite the reported activities of high numbers of wild rabbits !! Harvest time does seem to vary a lot across the valley and Costa Blanca. Near Nieves it seems to be anywhere between September and New Year. The late grapes are used for the New Year Celebrations with ’12 grapes and champagne’.
The grape harvest creates about 10,000 temporary jobs across the Costa Blanca and local growers have had a good year, despite a new “plague” of wild rabbits which have threatened the harvest in some areas.
In the main they grow table grapes in the areas of Novelda, Aspe, Hondón de los Frailes, Hondón de las Nieves, La Romana, Monforte del Cid and Agost. (most wine grapes are grown further north in the Jumilla area).
You will see millions & millions of grapes wrapped in paper bags to protect the grapes until they are picked from September onwards.
Last year production in the Hondón region was more than 40,000 tons.
SO EAT MORE GRAPES !!
